Friday Post

Jack and I were talking today about all the things we learned about our new daughter in under 20 hours of time. A few facts about Miss Gabi -- she is 9 years old, turning 10 on June 30th. She will be finishing the 3rd grade at the end of May, loves Reading, dislikes Math. Her favorite color is pink, she understands more English than she can speak. Gabi loves vegetables, does not like chocolate at all. Her favorite juice is orange, does not like soda, coffee or tea. She's worried about learning to ride a bike and taking the airplane home.

She loves bubbles, frisbee and super balls - loves the swingset and is very proud when she's able to learn something new. She's very excited about having a new family and went through pictures on the camera repeating every name Jack said. She wanted to know who everyone was in the pictures --- and we had the card with pictures beginning in November ... she saw everyone and has heard their name at least once! Gabi also loved sidewalk chalk -- here she is writing her name along with Mama and Papa in Bulgarian.

I've had a few e-mails with concerns about how fast she attached to Jack & I -- there is always a concern with RAD, which is an attachment disorder. Please know that Gabi didn't immediately run into our arms -- she was encouraged by the translator to hold our hands in the beginning. It was tentative at first ... after a time (and remember we spent 6 hours a day with her) she would grab our hand on her
own. She didn't jump into our laps right away -- we encouraged it when we were sitting and so did the translator -- after a while she chose to come there. She did not go up to strangers and hug, touch or look for attention .... Ganka is a very affectionate woman, she was constantly hugging, touching, tickling and reassuring the children. Gabi has been with her 3 years and shows a great deal of attachment to her .....

Today we did a lot of walking around our area figuring out where there's a grocery store, fruit market, household supply store and others. It is much like Kazakhstan except the stores are not all in one place. I want to have a good idea of where things are so when I come back here with the girls we're comfortable.

On to the streets of Sofia .... this is the street our apartment is on - the cars are always parked on the side, doesn't matter which way they are facing, they just park. There are no lanes -- it's not a one-way -- if you're coming down the street and another car wants to go up the street, one waits or backs up or they beep at one another until one gives in and moves.

Tonights dinner was at a new restaurant (we definitely were out of the box Jonathan). My dinner was called "Bites." The description was this -- chicken, pepper, bacon, tomato all on a hoagie. I'm thinking it's like a club sandwich ...... what do you think? Is this what you pictured????? Check out the BOWL of french fries that came with it ........ This is what I got -- 3 of them are sliced chicken breast wrapped in the semi-cooked bacon & 3 of them are pepperoni wrapped in the bacon -- in the center is a tomato with a sauce poured on top -- all of this is sitting on a pizza crust ..... It was okay -- I pulled the chicken out of the middle of the fatty bacon though, just couldn't eat that.

And Jack had "3 Beers" the description was 3 flat sausages with Vienna potatoes and parmesan cheese accompanied by 3 sauces - a horseradish, a hot mustard and a red sauce. This is his bread board of food .....
The sausage was pretty spicy but was good when you dipped it in the sauces. The horseradish made it taste sort of seafood ish -- the mustard made it taste sweeter and the red sauce wasn't good at all.

Not sure what's on the agenda tomorrow -- will depend on the weather. We had planned an excursion but thunderstorms are expected and nothing will go then, if it does rain we're planning on heading to the 5 story mall to do some souvenier shopping.... oh no, the storms are starting; it's thundering like crazy outside!

Love to all!

Hi Mom and Dad,
I love the new pic of Gabi, she is just TOO adorable!(had to change my computer background again to the new pic!)
I think its a great idea to get to know where things are in the area, how will going back work? Will Gabi come to you at the apartment, will you get her right away or have to wait all week? Let us know... Is there any possibility things will go faster then August? Did they give any ray of hope?
I cant believe people were e-mailing about RAD...I know alot about it and that was the furthest thing from my mind, maybe because I can read into your writing and knew that Gabi didnt suction on right away that it took some coaxing, I am so sorry to hear that others were worried about that...glad things are cleared up!
Anyways, ICK about supper..I dont know what I would've done...you me, I am a pain, the fries looked alot like steak fries here, are they the same or? What is a majority of the cuisine there? Soup? Sandwiches? Veggies? Ect?
Wishing you were home here now that you could be..missing you a TON! Love you both very much enjoy your day tomorrow, hopefully the thunderstorms wont be too bad!
Love Always,
Lisa

Hi Jack and Cheryl,

Sorry I didn't write yesterday, it was a busy one. The weather was cold and rainy all day until 4:00, then it got warmer and the kids went out to play. I made pizza at Stacy's so they could play basketball and jump on the trampoline. Lisa came and brought Codee, she had to stay outside though. She was pretty good. When we got back to our house we had to hot glue Hailee's puff balls onto the large styrofoam, they kept falling off. We finished it totally and it looks good. So by time they left, I crashed on the couch.

I was at Stacy's today, helping to get ready for Jake's confirmation on Sunday. She is only having a small get together, but I am so proud of Jake. He makes his grandma smile. Kylie got sick at school today and I went to get her. She slept for 3 hours after coming home, just a bad headache. Then we were off to see mom. She is good. We played table dice with her, then did the dice game with Laurie in the activity room. She has a new roomie, Ruth, but she will only be there a week she thinks. So that is all the news I can think of.

The city of Sophia is very pretty. You're such world travelers, thanks for sharing with us. I don't think we will ever go to Europe to travel. Your new daughter, and my new niece is so cute. She seems very bright, upbeat and will go with the flow. I know you miss her already, but the time will go quickly.

Well being Friday we are off to dinner and a movie, maybe. I am sitting for the kids till 5:30 or so. Then off to baseball and Gramma Jackies. I'm free tonight. YEAH!!!!!

Have a great weekend, hope those storms get out of there soon. Can't wait to talk to you both soon.
Stay well and see you soon.

Love and hugs.....

So glad you have these couple of days to just be the happy tourists. Can't wait for you to be home and hearing all about everything.

Not much new here. No rain for us today. Just spent the day working in the yard. Tomorrow we will be getting six yards of mulch. Woo Hoo!!! You know what I will be doing for the next few days... Ken's planning on doing weed killing tomorrow. And of course...we are still pumping.

Hope you don't get rained out tomorrow.

Love ya!

Hi! Cheryl and Jack,

That's good that you tour the city to find your landmarks,so you would be alittle more comfortable when you return. Your Daughter is just a delight... Next time you talk to Gabi, let her know when she comes home, that you have a friend Donna who "Loves to sidewalk color and blow bubbles and we'll set a play date.."

This has been a very positive journey for you and your wonderful family, don't let people's comments bring you and Jack down.

We love your posts.... The food is a different story.. some of the dishes looked really good, the others not-so-much..... I sure loved the picture of Gabi and Jack with that huge piece of cake. Now that's talking a sweet treat!!!!!

Can't wait for you come home and tell us all about your adventure.

Then Bruce and I will tell you about our adventure with our 5 month old grandson we had over the weekend. ( We've been empty nesters for many years, and I just can't believe that a little 5 month old baby, who can't walk or talk can make us exhausted.. it was fun,a good exhausted. can't wait to do it again..)

Have a good day and thinking of you... will check in later.

Love Bruce and Donna

Another wonderful post. I love hearing more about Gabi—she's a Cancer like me and Garrett (so that makes her even more special). Also loves vegetables and dislikes chocolate (a girl after my own heart). The wait until August will be unbearable. I'm sure you're both missing her already. Will she be entering 4th grade come fall?

You say she's been loving with her foster mother for three years, before that was she living with her birth mom (or in an orphanage)? I'm so glad she's living with such a loving foster mom and that she is so in favor of Gabi finding a forever family. I was worried she was living in an orphanage (like in Kaz) where other girls could influence her decision. Thankfully this is an entirely different situation. Is someone adopting Gabi's younger sister?

Thank you for allowing me to follow along. This journey has been far happier than your last trip. I bet Kay at TOL is beyond thrilled for you.

Stay dry,
Karen
