Stairway to Heaven????

It's only 5:30 here and we've put in a full day already ..... Jack's resting (is he making a habit of this or is it just me?) and I'm posting. We had breakfast at 8 and then headed out to pick up the Social Worker and Gabriela. When we arrived at Gabriela's she came running for hugs along with her adorable little sister!

The plan for the day .... we would see the National Historic Archeological Reserve -Madara. It is about 45 minutes away - we did find out that Gabriela does feel car sick when driving. Petco said that she has not been in a car very much ... think we will be bringing Dramamine when we pick her up.

Madara is located in the mountains -- it is a tourist attraction that many people from Germany and Italy come to see. Today there were very few people there so we were able to enjoy everything. We started at the base of the mountain, here is Gabriela all set to start our trip up the mountain .... and yes, it's the mountain behind her ....

We climbed many, many steps to reach The Rock Chapel - it is said that there is a strong power centre that benefits human health -- unfortunately it's blocked off so you can not enter the chapel anymore.

There were many caves in this area -- if you chose to explore it was at your own risk -- considering the falling rock signs that were posted everywhere we only looked in from the outside.

After more stair climbing we stopped to admire the pretty view:

More stair climbing and we looked up to see how much farther we had to go .....

There is a great amount of history to this mountain -- it was a prehistoric settlement dating back to 3rd BC -- the mountain shows a lot of the way people lived then ....

Here is Rossi, Gabriela, Social Worker Lady (seriously, that's what they call her)and Petco during a short break to catch our breath .... have I mentioned that there was a lot of stair climbing??

I don't know if you can make it out - but there is a rider on a horse with a lion below the horses' hoof -- it is chiseled into the mountain, the inscription around the rider states that the rider is from the time of Khan (701-717 AD) -- it represents the victory of the fights with their enemy Byzantium.

After this was our last major climb of the day -- 356 additional steps up the mountain to see the The Madera Fort -- it dated back 1300 years. Gabi and I had climbed probably a little over a 1/4 of the way up the stairs before Petco said that the stairs were becoming unsafe for Gabi to travel. He was right, as we made our way up the mountain the steps were becoming more uneven, broken and steep. Gabi and I made our way back down to wait at the bench, while the others made their way to the top.

Jack said it took over a 1/2 hour to climb the stairs -- it was a hard climb for all of them. The stairs were so steep that they had to stop every few flights to catch their breath. At the top were the ruins of the fort. According to Jack it looked like you were on top of the world, you could see everything. Jack said that it gave him chills to think of all that happened at that fort -- all the battles that were fought ....

The last picture for the day ..... the steps down ..............ahhh, going down was not as hard as going up .... thank goodness!

Gabi and I had a lot of fun waiting for everyone to return .... I learned she can count to 30 - she did this while jumping from one large brick to another so she understands what she's doing, knows the ABC's to J, knows many more words than we thought originally and seems to understand quite a bit of English. I would tell her what something was (zipper, fingers, ears, pants, leg, etc) in English and she would tell me Bulgarian. She told me I was Mama and Papa was up ..... when she heard Papa coming down to us she waited until she saw him and then took off with a running leap into his arms. How can this happen in such a short time? It's amazing how much of a bond there is - it was my greatest worry! Another positive -- we also learned that she can read well in Bulgarian ... at lunch Petco started to read her the choices -- she took the menu and told him she can read her menu and decide what she wants to eat. (hmmm, perhaps a little bit of an attitude)

She loves to climb in our laps, grabs our hands when walking, sat between us in the car and fell asleep on our shoulders with her arm linked in Jack's and there is joy in her face when she sees us --- it is right!

It was another great day .... it will be hard to leave her here tomorrow!

Well, I have to get the gifts for everyone together before we meet at 8 for dinner so I should be going.

Hailee -- while we were waiting Gabi was looking at pictures on the camera -- she saw you playing basketball and had no idea what it was -- you are right, you will have to teach her. Gabi right now is a girly-girl, BUT remember she has not had the opportunity to do any sports - we won't know what she likes or what she's good at until she gets home and can try them. There will be lots of new things for her to learn .....

We were able to take a short video today (I wish we brought the cords along so I could post it) -- in it she says "Hi Lisa, Hi Jonathan, Hi Amanda, Hi Hayden, Hi Hailee - I am Gabi, your new sister." She did a great job!

Oh my goodness...it sounds like she feels very attached to you guys already. How wonderful. You are right, it will be hard to leave her. Can't wait to see some video.

God has truly blessed your trip.

It all sounds so great! I'll bet she will be so excited to meet Hailee in person on your trip to bring her home. It is amazing to hear of how well she is bonding with you both and how well her English is already. I read in your last post that she is very excited to ride a bike. Oksana was too but is finding it very difficult so far with her Nistigmus (Wiggly eyes) because everything is moving and its tough to find her balance. WE have all confidence that she will get it soon though, just like Gabi will too! That is so cute what Hailee said about the dog not eating her when she came home...Hailee will be a great help with introducing Codee no doubt! It sounds like everything is working out beautifully, even meeting her little sister, you'll be able to remind her in years to come when she asks about the pictures. :) I don't know much about Bulgaria (Only from your site really) but what is their national language? I noticed in the pics that there was signs in Russian, do they have more than one prodominant language?
Can't wait to hear more and also see video. Thanks for posting!

More tears of joy today as we read your post. I've been sharing all of the posts with everybody at EMS and have gotten lots and lots of well wishes for you. Everybody's so excited to see pics when you get back!

Hailee and I had an interesting discussion on the way home today. I told her that Kylie will be working pretty hard to try to keep at least a bit of the girly-girl in Gabi. Hailee was laughing and telling me she'll straighten her out quickly...no pink, no frills...basketball and a single pony tail in her hair. She said she'll have to keep her away from Kylie. ;)

We're going to finish Hailee's science project tonight. Right now she's playing on the trampoline and playing basketball with Kylie and Jake. Both Kylie and Jake have baseball at 5:30 and Trevor has a friend coming over so I will be working with her then to hopefully finish it all up.

Everyone's looking forward to your return to hear even more about Miss Gabi. I know it'll be hard to leave her tomorrow, but next time you see her, she'll be coming back with you for GOOD!!!

Give her a hug from all of us and let her know we can't wait to meet her!!!!

Wow, what a different trip you are having. Such great news to us all. You sound so happy, yet a little careful.
Gabi sounds like a real joy to be around, a little attitude is okay, she is real after all. The bonding is going so well, I think she will be so excited when she comes here. We of course are very excited to meet her.

Her country sounds beautiful. I was hoping they were so impressed with you both that they were going to let her come home with you. Wouldn't that be so wonderful. The time will go fast, you will be back for her soon. How did she like the teddy bear from Hailee?

I am going to Stacy's with dinner soon. We are eating together then the dreaded science project will be worked on. We love having Hailee with us again for a few days. I love to hear her laugh and see her smile. She is such a good girl.

Hope you are both okay tomorrow. I know it will be a little harder on you all, just start counting down the days, and I think Gabi will work hard on learning her English while she waits. I'm sure she will surprise us all.

Love and hugs...

Hi Mom and Dad,
I know right now you are both sleeping..but finally Mom you can sleep easy knowing that Gabi was meant to be with us and become a part of our family. I am so amazed that she has bonded so quickly with both of you (yep more crying here when she called you Mama, and ran to Dad and ran for hugs.
I wonder what her conversations are like when you leave her for the night, to be a fly on the wall! Have you written her letters for the next few weeks to get her through, does she understand that you have to leave for awhile but will be back to welcome her into the family?
I know its going to be a really hard day tomorrow and there will be tears shed all around at having to leave her there for 12-16 weeks...however think of it this way, the first step of the process is almost over and time will fly to when you can go back with Hailee and pick her up for her forever family. My thoughts will be with you tonight and tomorrow morning knowing that you have to leave for Sofia again..but we are all that much closer to meeting her and having her home. I am sure if we could all will it, we would will it to be a faster turn around time then 12-16 weeks..maybe with enough positive thoughts we can make it happen? :*)
I love you both very much and miss you more!
Love Always,
Lisa

I love the title to your post—you have found your little angel in Bulgaria. She sounds so happy and full of life. And the fact that she has bonded so well to both of you already is a blessing beyond compare. Does it work the same way as it does in Kaz—does an older child get to choose whether she wants to be adopted or not? It's very clear what her answer would be. :-)

I'm so happy for you!!!!!

Just wanted to let you know what a fabulous job Hailee did on her homework tonight. We finished the science project. :) She also had 3 difficult science worksheets to do as well. She worked on them, along with reading all of the information aloud to me. After about 2 hours I called Jill and told her enough was enough. Jill agreed and Hailee was happy to have time to play more basketball with Jake & Trevor and go on the trampoline with Kylie. You'd be really, really proud of her tonight. She probably wasn't 100% happy, as I made her rewrite stuff if she was rushing and I made her read everything aloud. She did SO, SO, SO WELL!!!! I was really, really impressed!

Hi mom and dad,

Good night, I just watched Keith Urban live. I had an okay day. I will teach Gabi about sports, and I think Kylie won't get much time with her.

I love you both and Gabriela too...1,2,3,

Hailee
