We then headed out another door, through a courtyard (which, by the way, yelled Kodak moments), through another secure door to a large waiting area. The first stop was the payment window ..... must show my passport at this window. Go back and sit -- called to another window where they go over all the paperwork Rossi had prepared -- I had to sign several things and was asked a few questions as the official read over the court proceedings and medical reports -- did we visit the child before committing to adopt, how long was the visit, are we aware of medical conditions, are we willing to care for this child in the US .... that was it, we had to sit back down.
BUT a few minutes later we were called back up ..... the I-600 that I had to sign needed Jack's signature ............ but Jack's NOT HERE ..... they will decide if Jack will have to fax a signed copy over to them ....... my stomache dropped, it felt like my heart stopped and I started to get sweaty ..... seriously, this cannot be happening. Jack signed a power of attorney when we were here last time because they knew he wasn't coming back .... is that not good? When will they decide??? Rossi said it will be easy to fix .......... easy for whom I'm wondering ..... the cable 37 was supposed to be easy too! We will find out TOMORROW when Rossi goes to pick up the Visa paperwork at 11 IF WE NEED TO fax this over. So, Jack, you're on standby again ..... Can we not get a break here????
We're told to move over to the other side and sit (I definitely needed to sit and calm down -- kept telling myself I've held it together this far -- please, please don't fall apart now) -- eventually I'm called up for the interview process:
how long have we been waiting? how many other children do we have? ages? why did we choose Bulgaria? how long have we been here? how was the process? how much did I think we have spent on the adoption? do we like Gabriela? how does she fit in our family? why did we choose to adopt again? why an older child? did our adoption agency push us to come to Bulgaria?
Then Gabi is called over: she was asked several questions and she answered (Rossi was not with us so I do not know what she was asked) -- Gabi was then wished good luck in English and Bulgarian and given a flag pin.
Shortly after that we were excused ...... we made our way back to the first building, turned in our collection # and received our cameras and cell phones.
We then walked across the street - no loitering in front of the Embassy Rossi said -- to call a Taxi to pick us up. While waiting we took a few pictures and chatted -- all of a sudden an older guard is standing next to us -- he wants my camera from Rossi -- he deleted all the pictures (3) that we took. Rossi said she knew we couldn't take pictures when on Embassy grounds but didn't think it mattered because we were across the street well off the Embassy grounds. The guard was telling her something and and I could tell she was getting upset -- another younger guard came over and talked (actually kind of yelled) at the older guard -- the older guard went off in a huff. The younger guard apologized for our treatment and said something to Rossi. Our taxi pulled up then and we got in and left.
Rossi explained that the older guard wanted to take us back to the Embassy and check all of our passports against some list. (so glad I don't understand Bulgarian!) She said the younger guard told him that he was being very difficult and there was no reason to be rude. He said we were nice people and to just let us go on our way, he had contacted the higher ups when he saw the older guard approach us. So -- now we know, as does Rossi, do not take pictures anywhere NEAR the Embassy ...........
Don't tell the difficult guard but he left a picture on my camera -- this is Rossi and Gabi right after she called for a taxi .....
So we headed out, without a mission in mind .... stopped at McDonald's for some refreshments. The girls in the square below are cute but check out the guy in the back in the orange. He's a hot dog vendor .... but there's no stand that he's behind. He's wearing it over his shoulders, complete with the umbrella over his head ....... he didn't walk anywhere, he just stood there. By the way, in the picture Hailee is holding Gabi's birth certificate, court decrees and various other important documents that should have been put in the LOCKED APARTMENT before we headed out. We didn't let them out of our hands considering the way our days been going so far .....
And Gabi and I wrapped up the parting gifts for everyone. Right after this picture Gabi ran to change into something more comfortable ....
Then it was homework time and now the girls are vegging out while I update the blog. Hailee's hiding out in the bedroom watching a movie.
Before I go .... Gabi has been carrying around this piece of paper in her little green purse since we picked her up. She's taken it out often to read -- today I asked her to read it aloud while taping her. Thought that someday she might appreciate hearing herself read in Bulgarian. Most people say she will lose a lot of her Bulgarian within a couple months ......
Free day tomorrow -- MAYBE -- thinking we really won't know what the day holds until after Rossi goes to the Embassy .... hope and pray there are no new turns in the journey. I am truly getting tired ..............

I have to say that I am surprised that the agency didn't know you had to have your husband sign the i600 ahead of time if he wasn't going to be there, but like you said, he did sign over power of attorney, hopefully that is enough. I am getting nervous for our travels, seems like if something could go wrong it has for you. I am soo sorry. But you seem to be handling it very well. My husband would be losing it by now if he was in the same situation, i am the more relaxed one. I am curious what she is reading, is it a letter from her Foster mother? Blessings
Cheryl
You are one strong woman, I dont know how you stay so together.
Prayers are still going out for all of you.
You are the most awesome Mom, Wife, Daughter, Friend and Sister In Law.
Hang in there.
See you in a few days.
Love Gin
Oh my gosh—what the heck is going on? I would've lost it then and there. Was this a surprise to Kay too? During our dossier process, I remember asking Daniel if I needed to complete the guardianship document. He told me it was unnecessary; only single parents were required to do so. My gut told me otherwise. Unfortunately, I listened to the agency and wound up waiting an extra week for that apostilled document to arrive.
I pray that this gets all straightened out quickly. I pray you have the strength to be strong for your girls. I pray that the embassy guards leave you alone. I pray you get some rest. Hang in there—you're so close.
Karen
P.S. Cute video of Gabi. Have you had the letter translated?
And I was worried about my lady coming to use my big machine, when will this stop? You are so good Cheryl, don't think I could be so together.
Weird about no photos of the embasy would have liked to see it.
I'm already thinking about the Friday after Thanksgiving doing something with all your girls.
Hugs and kisses,
Celeste -- I think we are one of the first families coming through under the new Hague rules, however, because we are grandfathered with our I-600 our paperwork is the old way. I can't help but wonder if that is part of the problem here. If nothing else we're making the agency more aware of what they need to iron out for the families that follow.
Gabi is reading a poem I think, at least that what the set-up looks like. I have asked for the translation in English so she will always have it. It is not from her foster mom -- from a friend of the family she said. (thanks Karen!)
CATHERINE - thanks for the name of the song .... Hailee and I knew the melody just couldn't name the song!
Cheryl
I sure hope that you get some good news tomorrow and that everything will have worked itself out and the POA will be enough. I think its funny that Gabi likes the soaps so much...I wonder what will happen when you head home, what if a huge development happens in the story/ plot the last time she watches and she never gets to know how it ends up? I love how your apartment seems to have quite a bit of space, you can all go into different areas and have alone time to blog or watch movies etc. not at all what our apartment was like in Uralsk. I understand your frustration of having to carry around all the important documents while the apartments were being cleaned...there are always so many "what if's" and its hard to have a nice time out when you spend the time having to worry because they are original documents. I am glad that you are back in the apartment now and all is well. I was wondering, have you tried many Bulgarian foods there? What does Hailee think of them compared to what shes used to?
Oksana wants to say Hi to Gabi and thinks shes a good dancer (from the video) and agrees with Hailee that sleeping in is much more fun than getting up early in the morning. "Hailee has good idea mom...I would do that if I didn't have school. Can I do that?" My reply..." No, you are going to school!"
Can't wait to read about tomorrow...keep looking ahead, not too long and it will all be behind you and you will be on a flight home.
Catherine, Jamey and Oksana
Hi Mom, Hailee, & Gabi,
Geez...I dont think anything else could go wrong with paperwork at this point...the good news is that we already have the fax # to the embassy and if it means Dad needs to fax something over...it will get done. Hopefully they will just let it go since he signed things when you were over there in May...
I cant believe the Embassy guard! How rude was that? I cant believe that he threatened those things, when you were only taking a picture of the girls away from the Embassy grounds...thank goodness the younger guard was there to keep him in check...maybe he was having a bad day and took it out on you, not fair but it does happen like that.
I am so tired of worrying about these things, hopefully they will all just magically with some of our persistance get taken care of and the best thing is that we can officially start the countdown to you all being home here with us where we can get to know Gabi better, and welcome her into the family. One more night (since you are reading this in the morning) of sleeping in the apt there, and then you are on the plane home...although its a LONG plane ride...its the last one in this journey to bring Gabi home.
I love you all very, very much, and cant wait to see you on Weds at the airport!
All my Love,
Lisa
Good morning Ollmann girls,
Hope you can enjoy your last day in Sofia, better ask someone if they can tape the soaps for Gabi so she can stay current on them, and miss Hailee better sleep in once more as school and basketball are waiting for her.Cheryl I guess you should have taught me better about the laundry as there is quite alot for your return.I just talked to Daniel he states that all necessary forms were filled out while I was there so he is confidient that everything is ok.Hope the girls have pancakes once more so they can appreciate mine when you get home. You can tell Hailee I was in the sun all weekend so I am tanner than her:) Did I do that right?Well Lisa is on her way so we can go get somethings for gabi, see you soon LOVE DAD
I am so proud of the Ollmann ladies. I know all will go well. Put your faith in the Lord. He has blessed this adoption.
I don't know where the time goes. But everyday goes by in a flash. Today Norah lost her second tooth just before soccer practice. We just finished tucking her in. We took tooth fairy preparation pictures and I will have lots of pictures to show you too. Not as many as you take, but it's pretty many for me.
Steve is popping popcorn and we are having movie night. It smells really good.
Have a wonderful day and keep up that strength.
Hi Cheryl, Hailee and Gabi, I'm sorry that you are having so many hard times out there. It should not be this difficult at this point. But once you are on that plane and you have your precious gift of Gabi, you will forget all about the hard times. You are also lucky to have the precious gift of Hailee. Get home safe. Mary Whalen
My oh my...it is just one thing after another. Any news on Uncle Jack's signature with the I-1600? Other than that it sounds like things went well at the Embassy Interview. Will you guys still be coming home this week?
Thanks for the wonderful blogs and amazing pictures. The pictures of your apartment, the city, stores, meals, sites, etc. all really help in learning and reading about your visit -- thanks for taking the time to do that! Although, too bad you guys never found a spatula that wasn't $15!
Gabi seems like such a great girl and full of life! From the pictures and videos she seems to feel and act much more comfortable as the days pass. I know I would never let someone videotape me singing and dancing. You go girl! What is she going to do without her soap operas...too funny!
Mitch and I had a great time in Door County -- wonderful weather and lots of people out bumming around! We got to watch the Badger game on Saturday which was fun. We stopped for some breakfast at Julie's Cafe in Fish Creek on Sunday morning before we hit the road. Our waiter was a very nice, polite gentleman and was actually from...Bulgaria! I think he works in Door County for the summer and then heads back home?!? He was somewhat difficult to understand, but wished you the best of luck and thought choosing to adopt was wonderful! Neither Mitch or I caught the exact part he was from, I didn't want to keep asking him!
I got lots of reading done for school on the drive to AND from Door County, but still had more homework to do once we got home on Sunday. Had to do more homework yesterday before my night class...and guess what...more homework this morning before class today! Wanted to catch up on what's going on with you all before I start! Looking forward to the next update and even more to your safe return home!
Hope you all are having a great day...8 hours ahead....so, it's about 4 pm by you guys?!? Hopefully, you have good news to share and are beginning to pack up your bags to head home! Love and miss you all...can't wait to meet Gabi! Take care!
Love,
Ashley
