Holding On

We're still waiting .... Ryan's office told Jack that they have at least 24 hours; according to Jack that's 10 a.m. today. Hoping to hear something, but if not Jack plans to go downtown to the Senators offices .... he thought maybe in person he'd be more effective. Maybe to them this is routine -- maybe if it was their family they might feel a bit differently!

BEFORE I GO TO BED UPDATE: Jack said that now Kohl, Feingold and Ryan's offices are involved -- according to him everyone is on board EXCEPT the guy who needs to send the e-mail ..... maybe before the day is done in Wisconsin it will be done -- I hope so -- by the time you get up tomorrow it is already afternoon here. If the Visa 37 e-mail is not sent by the time the offices close here it will not be received until Monday ...... my fingers are crossed and prayers will continue!

Good news -- the medical evaluation that Gabi needs to exit Sofia has been scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow. Rossi took our forms to the office and they were kind enough to schedule the appointment based on our I171 approval (the approval that normally causes immigration services to send the cable 37 visa letter -- the step that was missed). Having this done will speed up the process -- hoping to still be able to leave on the 16th.

Thanks for all the comments! I read every one of them to Hailee & Gabi at breakfast this morning, it may sound silly but those comments mean the world to us right now ....

I promised myself I wasn't going to bore everyone with my whining today --- I thought I'd bore you with a look into our life in Sofia ..... and help you to get to know Miss Gabriela Lynn Ollmann a little better.

Gabi really is an even-tempered child -- so far nothing has upset her nor has she expressed frustration at not being able to communicate with us. We do have a English/Bulgarian book of 1000 pictures/words that has been really helpful when we're stuck on a certain thing. She loves playing card games and we've taught her old maid, go fish and a modified version of crazy 8's. She has discovered Nintendo games and she LOVES playing them -- Hailee thought she'd bring her DS and her older Nintendo for Gabi ..... it worked like that for a day. Then Gabi figured out that the DS is nicer -- every chance she gets she grabs it. So far Hailee hasn't said a word .... but it will come, I'm sure!!!

Being the girly-girl that she is Gabi loves everything that we brought along to pretty herself up. Hailee is being a good big sister and going along with it .... yesterday they did their nails. Check out the beautiful decorations on their nails.

And we've done play-dough, Gabi decided I needed to get my picture taken too. She loves the camera and has taken hundreds of pictures of "stuff" - we had about 15 pictures of every piece of furniture in the apartment, every toy we brought, the different floors in the apartment -- (shhhhh -- I delete the pictures at night when she's in bed -- so far she hasn't noticed)
For never seeing play-dough before Gabi caught on quickly -- she made snowman after snowman. When Hailee tried to show her that she could make other things she shook her head and her little finger while telling Hailee "no" -- we see that little finger shake a lot.
Yesterday we went walking around the shopping district and had lunch at the Pizza Place -- Jack and I had been there so I was comfortable knowing they had English on their menus. Hailee stuck to the Marguerita Pizza but Gabi was more adventurous -- she had a spinach and feta cheese pizza. It looked interesting ..... she ate 3/4 of it, where does that skinny little kid put it???? And in case you're wondering where Gabi got the beautiful piece of jewelry she's wearing on her neck -- we did some beadwork too!

Believe it or not we have a "soap opera junkie" on our hands? She actually told Rossi to tell me that we shouldn't go out from 2:30 - 5:30 each day -- I didn't think she was serious, but ..... at 2:25 (before this she had checked the little travel alarm we have about 50 times) Miss Gabi got a cup out, carefully poured some juice into it and settled herself into this chair -- and there she sat for the next 2 hours!!!! At the commercials she would go to the bathroom or refill her juice. Oh my goodness -- she's 10!!! She also likes to have control of the remote ..... guess she'll have to work that one out with her Daddy!
It's a beautiful day today in Sofia. We decided to go to the park and actually ventured out much, much further than we thought. As long as there are landmarks that we can remember every time we turn I feel pretty comfortable. We happened upon this amazing square -- the flowers were so pretty we just had to get a picture. Check out the green purse that Gabi is carrying -- she's so cute -- we say we're going out and she runs to get her purse, she puts on her lip gloss, brushes her hair and puts her headband on, sprays on this body spray she has and she's all set to go ..... Hailee just rolls her eyes!
Hailee found it interesting that in every block there's a store like this -- cigarettes are displayed in the windows along with liquor. She asked me why these stores are everywhere -- don't they understand that people die from smoking? It's a good question .......
Ahhh, another wonderful discovery today was the fruit market -- they had the yummiest looking fruit. Gabi picked out nectarines and Hailee found the biggest raspberries I've ever seen. We purchased the nectarines and Hailee asked about the raspberries and the man at the booth said "not fresh" and pointed to a booth further down and said "very fresh there" -- what a nice guy ..... he gave up a sale so we would have the freshest raspberries! And he was right!!! We had them for lunch -- we'll be going back again tomorrow!

Isn't this church beautiful? The picture really doesn't do it justice. Outside of one of the entrances there was an old man, stooped over, Santa Claus beard with long hair -- as people left the church he would bow to each person. Hailee watched him for a long time, finally she asked why he bowed to people -- I asked her if she had noticed the cup in his hand and explained that he was hoping to get money from the people. She continued to watch him -- eventually she said that not one person had stopped and given him any money .... could we take him some? Of course we could -- so she did -- he bowed deeply to her and said something in Bulgarian. She came back over to us and said that she knew he was very grateful because he smiled at her when he bowed .....
Trolleys are everywhere and they are packed with people. I love the look of the bricked sidewalks and streets -- I don't like walking on them though, there are uneven spots everywhere and if you're not watching what's in front of you you're tripping all the time. I tripped twice today and both times Hailee gave me that; Geez Mom you're embarrassing me look, you know the one where they tilt their head and roll their eyes to the sky as they shake their heads back & forth .... hope she doesn't teach that one to Gabi!!!
The book fair in the middle of the square -- we found a book about Bulgarian culture & history in English for Hailee's social studies class and Gabi asked for a Snow White book .... really was hoping to find a larger puzzle because I brought 3 - 100 piece ones that Hailee has put together. She suddenly loves puzzles ... who knew?? Thought it might be fun to get a bigger one we could all work on -- no luck!
This picture is for the teachers ..... a good part of the morning and later in the afternoon are devoted to school work. Hailee has been journaling for English, doing math worksheets, reading and doing her comparision chart for social studies. Gabi must work on school work too -- we brought several workbooks for her. She has been working on writing numbers and doing math problems. We're starting at grade 1 and will work our way up -- I was surprised that she knew several color names when they were written in English. We also work with the English/Bulgarian word book -- going through the common words and having her repeat them in English. She's a very willing student.

As you can see, we're enjoying our time in Bulgaria and the time spent together getting to know one another is priceless. Before I go I wanted to share a SUPER POSITIVE moment that happened last night -- Gabi was in the tub and I left the bathroom to give her some privacy (these are the hard things -- how do you know if she needs you or she doesn't), after a little bit I heard this little voice calling "Mama" from the bathroom. I went in and she was sitting there pointing to her hair and the shampoo - she wanted me to wash her hair!!!! Washing her hair wasn't the super positive part -- I'd done that before ...... it was the fact that she called me "MAMA" -- until that moment she had not called me anything ..... it's a start!!!

Hi Mom, Hailee, & Gabi
Thank you for all the information on Gabi, it just gets me more excited to meet her when she gets back here to WI, I will be at the airport no matter what! The funny thing is Mom, you are a fantastic writer and I can actually see Gabi running, grabbing her green purse putting on chapstick, and Hailee in the front room shaking her head thinking about how she is going to try to get Gabi to be a tomboy...Ummm yeah Hailee, good luck with that one!

And then when you tripped on the street,Mom, I couldn't contain my giggle because there are many times Hailee has give both of us that look and I can picture it as if I was standing right next to you!

Everyone here at my office is on the edge of their seats with us thinking about you girls over there. (just had a thought, Dad is really going to be overpowered by women when you get home,4 verses 1...until Jon,Amanda,& Hayden get back then it will be 5 women verses 3..better odds :*) )

Tonight is the premiere of "Hotbed Hotel" at the Theater Guild, and Aunt Nancy, Aunt Pat, and Aunt Gin are all meeting me at the house at 5:30 for dinner and then we are doing a girls night & going to see the show, wishing you were here to come with us to see it too..it will be fun...

I suppose I should leave room for other people to post as well..WOW! 19 Comments on yesterdays post...excellent feedback!

All my Love,
Lisa

Hi Ollmanns
What beautiful pictures you have shown.
Gabi looks so happy, Hailee you are just a softie letting Gabi paint your nails who knows you might get to like it.
Bring a few of the raspberries home to me I love them.
What are you "cooking" for meals in the apartment, is it a full kitchen with stove(like ours)?
Pat says Hi she is with Mrs T today grocery shopping. Nancy is sewing placemats for Pat Goglio so that is keeping her busy.
I am doing nothing, laundry cleaning my house, wash my hair and going by Mom and will check on your Dad.
Have a great day and you are on our minds all the time.
Love Gin

Its great to read about all the things you are doing...love the last part where she called you Mama. Something I am sure you'll never forget. :) I hope all the paperwork that you need will come through very quickly and you won't have to worry about it much longer.
Its great to see that Hailee and Gabi are getting along well and I am sure Hailee is teaching Gabi more than even she knows.
Oksana says hi to Gabi and hopes she likes having a sister and a new mom and dad and she also said (Very dramatically) "It must be so cool to have a sister that can do fun stuff...I wish I had a sister like Hailee or Gabi. They are so lucky!!!" We keep checking in to see how you are doing. We are thinking of you often and can't wait for the great news that you will be on your way home. Love all the pictures of the girls and the things you are doing together.

Catherine, Jamey and Oksana

What a wonderful post mama. Your last story about the shampoo really touched me. Yes, it's a wonderful start. I love how different your girls are—it'll be fun to see if Gabi becomes more tomboy or if Hailee turns more girly girl. Although it must be difficult waiting for the paperwork, please try to enjoy this time together. As you know, once you get home everything goes back to living at a faster pace. I long for those simple Uralsk days where I spent hours cleaning root vegetables, cooking in one pot and then scrubbing down the chipped countertops. Ha.

Our thoughts are with you.

Thanks for sharing your fun time with us, I love to see the city and how different it is from here.
You let Gabi fill up that photo chip, if she took your picture she is a better picture taker than me.
My second big thing today Rudy got his bath, which means cleaning the basement also and walking him to get dry. The placemats are finally done and I'm now on to the knitting needle carrier for Terri.
Hope for better tomorrow.
Seeing its almost your bed time.
Will be seeing you at the airport.

What a wonderful update. Looks like you guys are keeping busy. Gabby is so cute with her purse and wanting to look nice when going out. Too funny about the soaps, guess she will have withdrawal when she goes to the U.S. I will pray for you guys right now that everything works out with your paperwork.

Hello,
I was so happy to see what a great time the three of you are having together. It just made me smile and cry too at the Mama comment. Hailee is so cute and such a great big sister and Gabi is such a smiley and happy little girl. Soon the paperwork will be complete and all will be well. Keep thinking positive and I will keep those prayers coming. Mary

Good Morning
Cheryl, Hailee, and Miss Gabi,
What great pictures--wish I was there with you. Glad to see Hailee doing some of her homework, he he he!
The nails look lovely---Cheryl did you get yours done too???
I dont' think I've ever seen a blue snowman...but I bet Gabi will really enjoy building a real one in just a few months.
Things at home are above average- I got my first email from J's teacher---hopefully they will nip it in the butt....J's first football game is Sat.- he will be playing defensive line backer and offensive running back. Tackle and pads---maybe a trip to the ER----he seems fearless--so I am really looking forward to seeing the team play together.
I tell my mom about your adventures and she hopes everything gets smoothed out soon.
Come HOME SOON!!!!

DON'T READ THE FOLLOWING TO THE GIRLS!
The birth mother of two of my foster kids was on the front page of the Milwaukee newspaper. She was the last woman killed by a guy named Ellis. He's a serial killer recently arrested here in Milwaukee. They said today that had the state done the DNA testing required since 2000- (Ellis was in jail and they didn't take a DNA sample before he was released) she might not have been killed because Ellis would have been connected to 7 other murders. Its so sad.
Take care!

Cheryl,
I have to commend you on a most wonderful blog. What an awesome day you had. Our day was long, but worth every mile driven. As we drove down their street, Monica, her dad, Norah and Benjamin (Steve was working) were walking Norah home from school as it's right up the block from their house. We had so much to catch up on. We had a very nice visit with our dads this evening. They were so happy to see us.

Benjamin was at the doctor's office this morning with an ear infection, but you sure wouldn't have known it, because he was his happy, smiling, never still self. I had the great privilege of helping Norah with her "homework" project. When it was time for bed, I read her a story, but was surprised that she was able to read it with me as she has already learned a lot of sight words. It was a good day.

Tomorrow is her special day and she is really looking forward to it.

I hope your day tomorrow is also "special" with the arrival of your paperwork.

Love ya MAMA,
Linda

Hi Aunt Cheryl, Hailee & Miss Gabi,

First off, I'm sooo glad you had a safe trip and eventually figured things out once you arrived -- how frustrating! I can not believe what you guys had to go through after traveling all that way. As I was reading, I kept thinking... eventually, this has to get better and I'm glad it finally did!

I was soo happy to read that you and Hailee had such a wonderful visit with Gabi and were able to bring her back with you -- how exciting! I loved reading about her, getting to know her more and more, looking at pictures and the things you guys have seen and done so far. Thanks for all the updates!

Then, I was really disappointed while reading about the struggles you guys are having and the uncertainty of the cable 37 -- what happened?!? Good job Uncle Jack and to everyone else who has been trying and helping to make this all work! What a roller coaster ride! But, it seems like you guys are making the best of what you can for now and enjoying spending time together!

Your blog yesterday was so nice and by far the best part of it all was Gabi calling you Mama! You must have been in heaven! Thanks for all the wonderful pictures of the girls, things you have been doing, places you've seen and other sites. I hope things went well this morning with Gabi's medical examination -- glad they were willing/able to schedule it! One step closer to coming home...

With school starting last week I have been unfortunately much, much busier than I expected. This semester of Grad school is harder and more time consuming than I thought and than my 3 classes this summer! The only time I've had to get on the computer has been to print off lectures, notes, readings and more readings for my classes. So far, I have not liked my 2 night classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings. My Tue and Thur classes are so far, pretty good. Once again, Fridays are left open for volunteering (as if anyone of us have time outside of class). However, my Fridays are used for work to make money to pay for school as well as the other days of the week! Other than school and work...not much else has been going on. Haven't had much time to work on the house lately. Still 2 more bathrooms to tear apart, redo and fix up! Mitch and I are headed to Door County on Saturday -- I have lots of reading material thanks to school for the car ride!

My thoughts and prayers have been with you all since you left and will continue to until you all return home safe and sound! Will check the blog once we're back! Hope you all have a great weekend! Hoping for good news and looking forward to the next update...love and miss you all!

Love always,

Ashley
