Uralsk Through Hailee's Eyes

Just wanted to post a bit about how Hailee is seeing the world of Uralsk. She has been writing everyday in her journal and last night I copied down a few of her thoughts to share with everyone.

The markets are very different here, milk is sold in bags and small containers; not gallons like we have. They do not keep the milk cold, it is warm until we open it.

The classrooms are old - Americans have much more to do in the classroom. The desks are long tables and the kids share. All the maps they use are very old and there are no computers and books around. It makes me sad.

There are stray dogs and cats everywhere I look. It makes me very sad to see how skinny they are. Some of the people in our apartment feed them everyday. I want to help them but I know I can't.

People here don't smile when I smile at them. They do not hold doors open for others. They walk almost everywhere they go. They go to the market everyday because they cannot carry all the things home.

Grandmothers and Grandfathers sit by the sidewalks and sell sunflower seeds and fish and cigarettes. I like the sunflower seeds, they are very good. Lots of people smoke here. I don't like the smell of that.

I miss my friends and family very much. I miss school and my home and I miss real spaghetti!!!! (yes, she has exclamation marks)

Hailee, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I can't wait to read all that you have written when you get home.
As hard as it may seem, this experience will make you appreciate all that you have so much more. You are a wonderful young lady, with an amazing family. You are very lucky and Kenda and I love you very much.
Love, Linda

Hi Hailee:

Was nice to read about how you see Uralsk.
What a wonderful way to keep memories, and your doing it all on your own. Sounds like you really appreciate what you have. You are one lucky young lady to have experienced how people live in Uralsk and back home in America. Good job Hailee. We're both so very proud of you, love you loads.

Hi Hails,

Wonderful that you are journaling, such great memories for you and Thanks for sharing with us. Even though we don't see each other that often at home, we miss you more knowing we can't see you now. I am glad you have gotten the chance to visit your homeland, and grateful you appreciate the things you have in your real homeland. It gives us a sense of being with you, knowing some things that you see and do daily. Are the markets large? Or small stores? I do hope your photos are working out. We are praying hard every day that things will start and continue to go smoothly. We love reading about your trip there and Thank mom for letting us all know what is going on. We miss you and send all our love to you.

Hailee,
I'm so proud of you...journaling every day. Now, you'll have to join us for some scrapbooking fun when you get home so you can put your journaling with your pictures in your own book as a keepsake of your trip. Kylie scraps too and would love to have you work with her. :)

We miss you!!

Hey dork,

Good to hear from you too; now you just need to get pops writing something. We would love to hear his thoughts on the food.

I hope that you are taking enough pictures so you can fill that Bratz scrapbook when you get home.

Amanda and I say "hi" and Hayden says "ooo". Love you!!! Keep writing!!
